Situated a 10-minute walk from Guildford town centre this award winning new-build house has unspoilt views of the Surrey countryside. The design of this house capitalised on this setting.

The detail

The steeply sloped site made the early stages of the construction challenging. Thousands of tonnes of chalk were excavated and removed from the plot in order to set the building partially into the ground. The result is that the building still appears to be single storey when viewed from the road, yet as you walk to the back of the house it becomes an imposing two storey construction.

The house is a contemporary design, combining beautiful natural materials such as cedar cladding and douglas fir posts with large sections of glazing and a gull wing zinc roof.

One of the design requirements was to create a sustainable energy efficient home. This was achieved by attention to detail to ensure the thermal performance of the building (view a particular focus on airtightness and insulation detailing), and the installation of a large solar panel array and air source heat pump.
