Challens Yarde is a grade II listed cottage in West Sussex. Flint Construction were appointed as the main contractor in the full repair and refurbishment of this picturesque historic property by the Cowdray Estate.

The detail

Drawing upon our extensive experience on working on historic buildings we painstakingly repaired the existing fabric using traditional construction methods. This included repointing and replacing areas of the original stonework, patching in lath and plaster using hand split oak laths to match existing, and refurbishing original timber windows.

The roof tiles were carefully stripped and set aside to enable us to insulate the roof using a highly breathable woodfibre insulation system.

Internally the building was modernised with new electrics, plumbing and heating throughout. Particular care was taken to ensure none of the works damaged the historic fabric of the building. This involved regular team meetings with designers, specialists and sub-contractors to agree creative and innovative solutions to route new pipework and wiring around the building. A collaborative approach to this project was key to it’s success.

Existing finishes such as timber floors and quarry tiles were cleaned and repaired, and the whole house was redecorated sympathetically using breathable paints.
