This project involved a comprehensive refurbishment and extension of a unique 1930’s Arts and Crafts house situated in a beautiful location in the North Surrey Downs.

The detail

St Martha’s Priory, in Chilworth is a 1930s’ timber-framed Arts and Crafts house and is cited as a fine example of the Surrey vernacular style. However, when we commenced our works it had been vacant for over 10 years and was in a state of neglect.

The challenge set by the new owners was to extend the house without detracting in any way from the original character of the building or disturbing the views from the North Downs Way and the medieval St Martha’s Church. This was achieved by some innovative design work. Rather than extending directly on to the original building and compromising it’s unique look, two single storey linking pavilions were designed to connect wings which provided the space for additional luxurious bedroom suites and a bespoke kitchen. By extending the building in a linear fashion, every additional room created had its own uninterrupted view of the North Downs.
